Hello friends! You may have noticed that the Green Stars Project has been gathering some dust and cobwebs lately. I’ve been focused on writing a book – on the topic of ethical consumerism, not too surprisingly – and I’m about to start looking for a publisher. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to getting back to blogging on a more regular basis, and catching up with your blogs too. To start with, I want to share this post on vegan Camembert that I published in April on Ethical Bargains.
I think most people would agree that the quality of plant based food is generally getting quite good, although there are still some weak areas. Here’s how I would rate the plant-based versions of the following animal-based foods.
Milk: There’s now a very wide range of milk replacements, and it’s quite easy to switch over.
Meat: We now have good substitutes for burgers, sausages, bacon, chicken pieces, and other items.
Fish: I haven’t had so much success here, but I plan to write an Ethical Bargains post on some vegan shrimp that I really liked (as did my non-veggie friends).
Cheese: Some vegan versions of feta and sliced cheese aren’t bad but more progress is needed in this space!
I was excited to find some vegan Camembert in Tesco Extra in Ireland (€4) that I would rate it as one of the best vegan cheeses I’ve found – especially among those at a price point on par with dairy cheese.
Please let me know if you’ve found any good vegan cheeses that come close to dairy cheese.
Grocery Outlet Ethical Bargains
Nurishh vegan Camembert is made in France for Bel Group, one of the largest and oldest cheesemakers in France, whose other brands includes Babybel and Boursin. Bel Group launched Nurishh in 2021 as its first 100% vegan brand, but has also recently introduced vegan versions of Babybel and Boursin (I picked up some vegan Babybel at the Grocery Outlet and will review it here soon). Some of the Nurishh vegan cheeses are available in the US while the Nurishh Camembert is mainly sold in the UK and Ireland, so far. I bought my Nurishh Camembert at Tesco Extra in Ireland (€4) and I would rate it as one of the best vegan cheeses I’ve found – especially among those at a price point on par with dairy cheese.

Glad to hear from you 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll look for the Nurishh vegan cheese available in the USA. Wishing you success in finding a publisher for your book.
